Digital Client Onboarding for Financial Advisors: From First Conversation to Working Plan

In short: Wealthstack replaces paper-heavy discovery with a guided questionnaire that clients complete in about seven minutes, either on their own or with their advisor. It builds the client's dashboard and first-draft goals automatically, and existing clients' portfolios link to their new dashboard without re-entering data.
Onboarding is where many advisory practices quickly lose time. Discovery forms go back and forth, details get re-keyed into different systems, and weeks can pass before a client sees anything that looks like a plan.
It's also the moment a new client forms their first impression of you. A slow, paper-heavy process doesn't match the service you want to deliver.
Here's how Wealthstack approaches onboarding, for both brand-new clients and clients you already manage.
How long should client onboarding take?
With Wealthstack, the client's part takes about seven minutes.
Clients answer a guided questionnaire, and each answer shapes the questions that follow. Nobody wades through sections that don't apply to them. At the end, Wealthstack creates the client's dashboard automatically, including a first set of financial goals built from their answers.
Two ways to onboard a new client
Let the client do it themselves. Copy your onboarding link from the Advisor Console and email it to the client. They complete the questionnaire in their own time, choose a username and password, and immediately get access to your calendar to book a meeting.
Do it together. If you're sitting across the desk or meeting by video, you can walk through the questionnaire with the client. This suits clients who prefer a guided conversation, or when you want to talk things through as you go.
When you onboard a client yourself, the dashboard starts as an internal dashboard. It's fully built, but the client doesn't have a login yet. That's useful for preparing a plan before presenting it. When you're ready, click "Send invite", enter the client's email address, and they can set up their own access. There's no need to repeat the onboarding.
What about clients you already manage?
Many advisors have a book of existing clients with portfolios but no plan or dashboard to show them.
If Wealthstack is connected to your data feeds, those portfolios appear automatically in the Advisor Console. A "Clients with no dashboard" list shows exactly who still needs one, so nobody slips through.
From there you can:
- Invite the client to onboard themselves. They receive an email, complete the seven-minute questionnaire, and their existing portfolio links to their new dashboard automatically.
- Onboard them yourself. Complete the questionnaire on their behalf, and the client's account data pulls straight into the dashboard. You can invite them to log in later.
Why this matters for a growing practice
Every hour saved in onboarding is an hour you can spend on advice. And because the questionnaire builds the dashboard and goals for you, the first meeting after onboarding can focus on the plan, not the paperwork.

If onboarding is where your time disappears, we'd be happy to show you the process from start to finish.
